By Steve Biedeck
WORLD-HERALD CORRESPONDENT
One thing new Omaha Lancers assistant coach Mike Aikens won't need is a history lesson.
Having already served one three-year tour of duty in the mid-1990s under Mike Hastings, Aikens is quite familiar with the expectations that come with coaching at one of the top junior hockey programs in the United States.
“When I left here things were good, and now I'm coming back and things are just as good, if not better,” Aikens said. “I coached at Ak-Sar-Ben in the old days; what a place to play. Now we've upgraded being at the Civic.”
Aikens said scouting and recruiting will be a big part of his duties with the Lancers. The past two seasons Aikens was coaching for the Russell Stover's program in the Kansas City area after serving as the head coach for the Williams Lake Timberwolves in the British Columbia Hockey League.
Mitch Torrel, Weantchee Wild
Torrel contributed over 96 hours of service in his local community, including leading the charge in a reading campaign with his team, which covered over 70 classrooms. The Air Force Academy recruit from Monticello, Minn., was also recognized in March for his heroics in alerting the local fire department and helping evacuate the residents from a burning senior living facility.
WENATCHEE, WASH. - Named to the All-NAHL Team were: forwards Michael Juola of the Fairbanks Ice Dogs and Jeff Jubinville of the Wenatchee Wild; defensemen Derek Docken of the Albert Lea Thunder and Jake Parenteau of the Alaska Avalanche; and Wenatchee goaltender Brandon Jaeger.

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) has announced that Wenatchee Wild goaltender Brandon Jaeger has been named the Sherbrook Hockey Goaltender of the Month for January.
Jaeger, a 19-year-old from Champlin, Minn., fashioned a 3-1 record during the month, including a 20-save shutout performance in a 6-0 victory over the Alaska Avalanche on Jan. 30, to compliment a 1.00 goals-against average and a .969 save percentage.
“Brandon has been solid for us all season,” said Wild associate head coach Ryan McKelvie. “He’s a very skilled goaltender who understands how prepare."
On the year, Jaeger, who played in last month's Sherwood/NAHL Top Prospects Tournament, leads the league in goals-against average (1.80) and save percentage (.935) to go along with a 14-2-1 record in 19 appearances for the West Division-leading Wild.
Last season, Jaeger, who was named the Sherbrook Hockey Goaltender of the Month for September/October, helped Russell Stover’s Midget Major (U18) team to an appearance in the USA Hockey National Championships.
"He gives his team a chance to win every night, and he should be a very good goaltender at the Division I level," McKelvie added.
HONORABLE MENTION: Bismarck’s Jake Williams; Janesville’s Matt Wichorek; Marquette’s Kevin Kissaw; Traverse City’s Chris Paliafito and Drew Strandberg
PAST WINNERS: Wenatchee's Brandon Jaeger (September/October); Bismarck’s Ryan Faragher (November); Janesville’s Geoff Sadjadi

In 23 appearances with the Express this season, Shibrowski, a 19-year-old from Edina, Minn., holds a 14-4-2 record to compliment a 3.09 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage.
“We're excited for Mike to be able to go to such a good school and a good hockey program,” said Express head coach Pat Cullen. “He’s worked extremely hard and is very deserving of this opportunity.”
Shibrowski will be the second NAHL goaltender to join a Division I program following the holiday break; the St. Louis Bandits’ Garrett Bartus will also begin his college career at the University of Connecticut (Atlantic Hockey) in January.

Bemidji State University's Jordan George, a Dubuque native, is tied for second in the country among freshman
scorers at the NCAA Division I level. He has been named league rookie of the week five times by College Hockey America.
Jordan George expected to spend most of his freshman year battling for a spot in the Bemidji State University lineup.
But before the Beavers even broke camp this fall, the Dubuque native realized he probably should have set the bar a little bit higher.
George immediately played his way onto the top scoring line at Bemidji State, which holds the No. 4 spot in the latest NCAA Division I poll with a 13-2-1 overall record. He has also won College Hockey America's rookie of the week award five times in the first nine weeks of the season.
"It's always nice to get the individual recognition, but the more exciting thing has been watching us move up in the rankings each week," George said. "It shows how much we've improved from the beginning of the season, and it's a nice reward for playing well all season.
"This team has unbelievable chemistry. It's like 25 brothers in the locker room. We play so well as a team, and we work so well within a system. We take care of our defensive zone first, and the offense will take care of itself. That's why
we've been so successful."
The 5-foot-8, 155-pound forward spent the past two seasons with the Topeka RoadRunners, of the North American Hockey League. At age 19, the dynamic playmaker could have returned for two more seasons of Junior hockey.
And that makes his ascent all the more impressive. College coaches like to take advantage of the Junior developmental system and bring in freshmen as 21-year-olds.
"We knew he was good, but he's exceeded our expectations," Bemidji State coach Tom Serratore told the Bemidji Pioneer newspaper. "When we get a freshman who can score and get a lot of playing time right away, it's a huge bonus, since we rely so heavily on our upperclassmen.
"He was highly recruited, and we really wanted him. He is a marquee-type player, and that's the way he's played so far. We just didn't think he'd have this quick a start."
Serratore immediately placed George on a line with juniors Matt Read and Ian Lowe. Read leads the team in scoring with 11 goals among his 23 points, and George ranks second with six goals and 19 points in 16 games.
"My biggest concern coming into this year was getting playing time so I could help the team win right away," George said. "So, I did everything I could to make sure I was prepared for college hockey. I worked hard at getting bigger and stronger and faster, and the guys around here gave me a lot of valuable pointers to get me going in the right direction.
"Fortunately, the coaches put me on a line with two guys who are pretty good. From Day 1, we had really good chemistry and we were able to put everything together."
Serratore believed George's advanced skill set would complement Read and Lowe. His inexperience at the Division I level didn't factor into the equation.
"He moves the puck quickly and is very good in tight areas," Serratore said. "He can stickhandle out of a phone booth."
George still finds himself learning something new every day.
"The college game is so much faster than Juniors," he said. "There are a lot of little things you can get away with in Juniors that can cost you a goal here. And a goal can cost you a game.
"That's something you always have to have in the back of your head. You can't try to do too much, and you don't want to do too little."
The Beavers, who reached the Frozen Four for the first time in school history last season, own an 8-0 record in CHA play. Next fall, they will move to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and christen a $90 million arena.
"It's definitely exciting to know you're going to play in the most prestigious conference in college hockey," George said. "It's always been a dream of mine to play in the WCHA.
"But, at the same time, we owe it to these seniors to put everything we have into this season. We want to win the CHA and go as far as we can in the NCAA tournament to send them out the right way."
Even Serratore can't help but look ahead every once in a while.
"Jordan will be a fixture here for us for the next four years," he said. "As we move to the WCHA, we need players like him. It's a league of high-end players, and he's one of them."
Brandon Jaeger's 1.71 goals-against average is tops among NAHL goaltenders.
The North American Hockey League (NAHL) announced today that Wenatchee Wild goaltender Brandon Jaeger has been named the Goaltender of the Month for September/October.
In 10 appearances, Jaeger, a 19-year-old from Champlin, Minn., fashioned a perfect 8-0 record, including a 28-save shutout performance in Kenai River on Oct. 13, to compliment a league-best 1.71 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage.
“Brandon has proven to his teammates that he’s an elite goaltender who has met and exceeded every challenge presented to him thus far,” said Wild head coach Paul Baxter. “He’ll be a high-level Division I goaltender in the very near future.”
Last season, Jaeger helped Russell Stover’s Midget Major (U18) team to an appearance in the USA Hockey National Championships.
"I'm honored to be named Goaltender of the Month, especially considering how many quality goaltenders play in this league,” said Jaeger. “The award just shows how much consistent help I’ve received from my teammates playing in front of me."

Multiple sources have confirmed that New Prague forward Seth Ambroz has given a verbal commitment to play for the Gopher hockey program.
"For the second half of the week – and the tournament as a whole -- we have to give it (the event's MVP) to 6'2", 195 lb. Seth Ambroz of New Prague, Minn and New Prague HS. Ambroz, so much bigger and stronger than practically every other kid here, could be a first round NHL draft pick in a few years, simply because he has skill and hockey sense to go with that size/strength combination. Here, he was a pure force, finishing up as the tournament's leading scorer with an 8-3-11 line. They don't hand out MVP awards at this affair, but if they did Ambroz would be a no-brainer. Will be playing in the USHL this season with the Omaha Lancers." - US Hockey Report

Nate Heng, a 17-year-old forward from Omaha, accepted a scholarship offer from UNO coach Mike Kemp this week. Heng said he's unsure exactly when he will begin his college career, but it's likely he will join the University of Nebraska at Omaha in either 2010 or 2011.
"The Mavericks play in my hometown, they're one of the top Division I programs and they play in the best conference in college hockey — so you could say my decision was a no-brainer," said Heng, a forward who has spent the past two seasons playing midget hockey in Kansas City with Russell Stover.
Heng will be joining fellow Russell Stover alum and Omaha native Nick Oddo at the University of Nebraska - Omaha.

The Stars selected center Scott Winkler with the team's third round selection (89th overall). Winkler played for Russell Stover in the Kansas City area as part of the U.S. Midget League, putting up some impressive numbers: 40 goals and 52 assists for 92 points in 70 games.
"Scott has very good size and sees the ice well," said Stars North American scout Bob Gernander. "There are no shortcuts to his game and he is very determined offensively and defensively. He plays a physical game with a lot of detail and he has good vision of the rink."
Norwegian-born, Winkler also played for his home country of Norway at the World Junior Championships.
"He shows good potential across the board," said Stars Europen scout Matti Kautto. "He's a smart player who shows a lot of upside and skill. He was one of Norway's best players at the World Junior Championships."

The Bismarck Bobcats have announced that goaltender Jake Kremer has committed to the University of Minnesota (WCHA) for the 2008-09 season.
The Bobcats’ MVP this past season, Kremer fashioned a 17-24-5 record to compliment a .910 save percentage and a 3.30 goals-against average.
“Jake is a perfect example of a player who’s work ethic carried him to the next level,” said Bobcats head coach Byron Pool. “He works as hard as any player in any league.
“I’m real excited for Jake; I think he’ll make it real hard for the Gophers not to play him.”
Kremer, from Eden Prairie, Minn., led the league in saves (1,475). He also finished second in the NAHL in minutes played at 2,691:39.
“I grew up loving the Gophers and I watched them every time they were on TV, so this is a dream come true,” said Kremer, who turned 20 this month. “The university is great, it’s a tough school to get into and it’s an added bonus that it’s so close to home.
“I learned an important lesson this season: Someone is always watching,” he added. “I practiced hard every day and Byron took note of that. Without his help, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today.”
